Background
The Occupational Safety and Health Department (OSHD) was established in the Ministry of Labour to protect the safety and health of workers in Jamaica. It is our mission to encourage, promote and facilitate an adequate standard of Occupational Safety and Health for all workers in Jamaica by:
  • The effective auditing of all operations under its supervision;
  • Offering guidance and advice on safety and health issues;
  • Providing timely and reliable statistics to all relevant bodies (for example, Parliament, PIOJ and ILO) locally and internationally, to which it reports.
  • Creating a public awareness and appreciation of its role and functions.

In its proactive approach, the OSHD seeks to secure wellness of body, mind and spirit of the workers by ensuring that they are provided with a safe working environment. In addition, the Department seeks to empower workers by educating them on the hazards with which they work. We also advise the owners/ mangers of these establishments on ways to ensure that the work place is safe. With the evolution of work, the traditional methods used by the OSHD have not been able to keep pace with the volume of information, nor with the size, number, diversity or complexity of industrial establishments. The net result is that the Department has over time, not been able to adequately meet the demands placed on it by workers, owner/managers and the International Labour Organization (ILO). This is particularly chronic with regard to providing information on workplace hazards. The Department also foresees an increased demand for its advisory and technical services with the imminent passage of the Occupational Safety and Health Act when it will be required to supervise all branches of economic activity, not just factories. The Department, to address these concerns, has developed this website.

Purpose

The main purposes of the site are:

  • to assist the department in effectively carrying out it's mandate,
  • creating a public awareness and appreciation of its role and functions,
